As summer comes to an end and fall temperatures take over, new data from AAA Travel has highlighted where people in the United States plan on traveling before the winter holiday period.
In the U.S., domestic travel has taken over, with Orlando ranked as the top fall destination, followed by Boston and Seattle. Denver and Las Vegas round out the top five hotspots, while New York, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, and Atlanta completed the Top 10.
As for international travel, the top destinations for fall 2024 include Rome, Paris and London, in order. The rest of the Top 10 includes Vancouver, Dublin, Athens, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Venice, and Lisbon.
“This time of year is known as shoulder season in travel which means mild weather, fewer crowds, and better prices,” AAA Travel Vice President Stacey Barber said. “AAA booking numbers show more people are flying this season both domestically and internationally, and many travelers are taking fall cruises to enjoy the foliage in Alaska and New England.”
Booking data compared to last year indicates that flights and cruises have seen increased demand, with domestic flight bookings up one percent and international bookings up three percent. The average domestic roundtrip ticket is $660, while the average international roundtrip ticket is $1,315.
Domestic cruise bookings are up a whopping 19 percent over last fall, and international cruise bookings are up six percent. The average cost to sail from domestic cities is similar to the previous fall— $2,355—while the average price of international cruises is up one percent to $3,560.
