The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co. announced a partnership on October 15 that will bring the world’s second sphere to the city in the United Arab Emirates.
The first Sphere opened in Las Vegas in September 2023 to worldwide acclaim. It’s a music and entertainment venue with a remarkable spherical shape upon which electronic displays can show a variety of different things, from changing colors to images of planets, emojis and more.
Sphere Entertainment hopes to bring its unique entertainment venue to destinations across the globe. The new Sphere in Abu Dhabi will be around the same size as the first one, with space for 20,000 guests.
It does not yet have an expected opening date.
“We are excited to bring Sphere to Abu Dhabi in partnership with Sphere Entertainment, providing our residents and visitors with an extraordinary new form of entertainment,” said H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi. “Sphere Abu Dhabi will seamlessly integrate advanced technology with captivating storytelling, creating unforgettable memories for everyone who visits. This partnership aligns with our Tourism Strategy 2030, further establishing Abu Dhabi as a vibrant hub for culture and innovation. By embracing cutting-edge entertainment like Sphere, we’re not only elevating our global profile but also setting new standards in immersive experiences and cultural offerings.”
Under the partnership with DCT Abu Dhabi, the destination organization will pay a franchise initiation fee for the right to build the venue, which will also be funded by DCT Abu Dhabi.
