The FAA is celebrating America’s milestone birthday in a major way, announcing a 1.776 billion dollar airport upgrades fund.
Officials have announced nearly $2 billion in grants to upgrade airports across 46 states in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, which was officially celebrated on July 4th.
The exact number of funds is a nod to America’s founding year: airports nationwide will receive multiple grants totaling $1.776 billion for improvement projects.
The money will be spent on improvement plans, including safety enhancements, runway upgrades, infrastructure needs, and more.
Among some of the larger projects receiving a significant share of the investments are:
- $88.8 million to Denver International Airport for pavement projects
- $74 million to Boise Air Terminal/Gowen Field for runway rehabilitation, apron expansion, and upgrading visual guidance lights
- $62.4 million to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport for runway and runway lighting rehabilitation
- $62.2 million to Houston Hobby Airport for runway construction
- $47.6 to John F. Kennedy International Airport for taxiway construction and to reconstruct an aircraft rescue and firefighting building
- $36 million to Orlando International Airport for terminal, taxiway and lighting rehabilitation
- $28.1 million to Oakland International Airport for taxiway rehabilitation
“This funding does more than just rebuild runways and taxiways, it modernizes the travel experience for American families, ensuring our airports are safe and ready for the future,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
Improving runway safety has been top of mind for airport officials this year, after incursions and notable incidents, such as the collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), have highlighted the need for enhancements.
By announcing the 1.776 billion dollar airport upgrades fund, the FAA has begun to address a critical travel infrastructure need in the United States of America.
